WORCESTERSHIRE completed a quick-fire double over Berkshire in the Spitfire National Over 60s Championship South.

The County veterans beat them away and at home in the course of six days and are now third in the table behind Sussex and Hampshire.

In the return game at Old Elizabethans, skipper Colin Groves won the toss and batted first on a good wicket.

He then guided Worcestershire to 91 off the first 21 overs before fellow opener Keith Middleton was bowled by Ian Beckett for 48.

John Shepherd (42), just one year after a major cancer operation, helped take the innings forward to 150 from 33 overs when he was bowled for Beckett.

The same bowler accounted for the in-form Groves (85) in his 3-54 from nine overs. Worcestershire motored on to 237-4 from their 45 overs with Brian Pleass adding 25 not out, Trevor Knowles 18 and Chris Taylor 8no.

Berkshire went from 217-7, needing 21 from 12 balls, to 231 all out on the last ball of the 45th over when Mike Williams was stumped by Taylor as he tried for a big six to tie the game.

Chris Harding scored 104 before he was dismissed by Groves, while Martin Woodward claimed 3-26 and there were two run-outs from excellent fielding.

Worcestershire completed a six-run win and bagged 22 points.

In the first match between the sides at Hurley, Berkshire won the toss and decided to bat. The hosts made 192-8 with captain John Masters scoring 64.

Woodward (3-37), Shepherd (1-34), Knowles (1-27), John Brookes and Cliff Rawlings all bowled well.

Brookes, Pleass, Barry Briscoe, Middleton and John Swift excelled in the field, while wicketkeeper Roger Price claimed three stumpings and a catch.

At the start of the last over, Berkshire were on 188-5 but the six balls bowled by Rawlings proved eventful.

Pleass took a great catch to dismiss Masters, Beckett was stumped by Price and John Baker bizarrely ran himself out.

In reply, Shepherd scored 95no, Swift 32no and Pleass 30 as the County reached 193-4 to claim 22 points with three overs to spare.

Fine bowling by Tom Clay had earlier skittled three batsmen for just 11 runs.

Worcestershire’s previous game saw them lose by five runs to Wales at Aberdare.

The home side elected to take first hit and scored 217-7 from 45 overs with most of the batsmen pitching in.

Taylor (1-20), John Goodreds (0-19) and Adrian Pawsey (1-36) were the pick of the bowlers with Dick Brown responsible for two run-outs.

In reply, Taylor (58no) did his best to see the County home but they fell five runs short on 212-8.

Knowles added 28, Brown 25 and opener Middleton 20.
