WORCESTER City manager Carl Heeley hopes his strikers Danny Glover and Mark Danks will continue to defend from the front at Vauxhall Motors in Blue Square Bet North tomorrow (3pm).

The St George’s Lane boss was extremely pleased with his attack pairing during the 4-2 victory at Eastwood Town on Tuesday night as they provided the first line of defence.

City, who were transferred from South to North this term, have made a decent start to life in the new division, despite an opening-day 2-1 defeat to Gainsborough Trinity.

Although there has been one win and one defeat, the performances suggest Heeley’s men should have a better campaign than the last one when they finished in the bottom three of the South.

“It is difficult to single out one area of the team for how well they have played,” Heeley said.

“But, the other night at Eastwood, I was very pleased with Danksy and Danny. There is nothing better for a defender than to see your strikers defending 40 yards up the field and winning a throw in that final third of the pitch — it gives them a massive lift.

“Defending from the front is crucial and it was fantastic to see.”

Heeley was set to run a fitness test over central defender and assistant manager Mark Clyde last night at training after he picked up a knock to the ribs in the win at Eastwood.

The former Northern Ireland international struck twice in the match in Nottinghamshire and the City boss is hopeful his defender will be fit for the trip to Cheshire.

“Sometimes you do get bangs and bruises and you don’t really know about it until the next day,” Heeley said.

“Clydey is complaining his ribs are sore but hopefully he will be OK.”

City have come up against two teams who play direct football in their opening two fixtures but the Lane boss expects tomorrow’s hosts to play more of a passing game.

“Whatever style of football the opposition play, we have to be able to adapt,” he said.

“If a team decides to launch the ball at us, we have to deal with it.

“If they want to get the ball down and try to play, then maybe that will create openings for us.

“We have been happy with how we have played so far this season.

“There are still little things that we can improve on and we need to do that quickly.”

Vauxhall have had a tough start to the campaign, having lost both of their opening matches.

The Rivacre Park side were beaten 2-1 at Ilkeston Town in their first match before returning home to lose 1-0 to AFC Telford United.
