WORCESTERSHIRE’S Helen Russell continued her successful season with a win at the West Midlands Regional Championships.

Russell, who races for Team Tri-UK, took on the region’s best in the championship race at Barton Marina, Staffordshire.

Competitors had to swim 1,500 metres in the marina lake, cycle 40 kilometres and run 10km around the lakes.

The Evesham Wheelers member dominated from beginning to end.

She led from the starting gun but found the bike leg challenging.

Despite this, she headed out for the 10km run with a lead of six minutes.

Russell comfortably brought home the win in two hours 22 minutes 51 seconds, eight minutes ahead of second place.

This result comes on the back of a number of recent victories for the Bromsgrove star, including the Ross-on-Wye Sprint Triathlon and the Cheltenham Off-road Triathlon — her first mountain bike race.

She said: “I am really proud to be the West Midlands champion. I have never led a race from beginning to end before and know that I can still improve in all three disciplines.”

Following her age category victory in the British Aquathlon Championships last month, Russell’s final race of the season will be the world version in Budapest, Hungary, on September 8.
