Wolves to host USA select side


WORCESTER Wolves begin their British Basketball League pre-season with a double-header against a USA select team.

Paul James’ side play host to the tourists, who will face various league clubs across the country, a week tomorrow (7pm) and the following Wednesday (7.30pm).

Wolves’ head coach said: “There will be a great deal of top-class basketball at Worcester in the next month or so.”

Fans can buy season tickets at the University of Worcester, which will allow them free entry to the friendlies.

All other spectators will pay £6 per adult and £3 for under 16s to watch the top-class American outfit.

The BBL Trophy starts on Saturday, September 18, with a home game against Cheshire Jets and then the arrival of Mersey Tigers the Saturday after.

The first BBL championship match at home is on Saturday, October 2, against Newcastle Eagles.

Meanwhile, the newly-created Wolves women won all three games in their first tournament at Leicester’s Fullhurst Community College.

Wolves narrowly beat City of Leicester Lady Hoops 50-49 in their first game.

Rebecca Brindley put on an impressive performance on her birthday with 29 points.

Although Lady Hoops led 30-28 at one point, Wolves secured victory with Helen Webb and Gail Hopkins adding 11 and four points respectively.

Wolves followed up with a comfortable 61-27 victory over a second team from the Leicester area.

Rebecca Davis was the leading scorer with 13 followed by Webb (12) and Brindley (10).

Bury were the final victim in the last game of the tournament which ended 45-24 to Wolves with Brindley (13) top-scoring alongside Davis (7) and Webb (7).

The women continue their preparations with regular training at the university and a friendly tournament this month in Manchester.

Worcester’s competitive debut is on Sunday, October 3, at Wellingborough Phoenix in the National Trophy.

On Sunday, October 17, Wolves face Guernsey in National League Division Two (Midlands and south west group).
