ARE Worcestershire really the worst side in county cricket?

According to one member of the national press who spends most of his time wrapped in the England bubble all year round they are.

But really? I think we all know the true answer to that question is an emphatic no.

Yes, the New Road side do not possess all the best players. They don’t have the biggest ground nor do the have the most money in the bank.

But that doesn’t make them the worst team on the circuit.

OK, they finished bottom of the North Group in Friends Provident t20 and it took them eight attempts to secure their first win in the Clydesdale Bank 40.

However, with all the big names, the ones who might have stopped this so-called expert on the game not make such a statement, gone, Worcestershire have performed admirably.

They are still in with a shout for promotion in LV= County Championship Division Two and they won four out of their last five games in the CB40.

The bank holiday Monday win over Group ‘A’ leaders Somerset Sabres was pleasing, but it was the thrashing of Surrey Lions that brought the biggest smile.

The Brit Oval side spent the autumn splashing the cash and strengthened their under-performing team considerably.

Then before last Wednesday they were given, yes given, they didn’t have to pay one penny, one of the world’s best batsman in Kevin Pietersen so that he could try and rediscover his form ahead of this winter’s Ashes series.

“It was David against Goliath at Surrey and we spoilt their party.”

And with KP came the circus, or the national media.

But instead of seeing Pietersen, who is on loan at the Oval from Hampshire until the end of the season, smashing poor old Worcestershire, they saw Vikram Solanki and Gareth Andrew crush his new side with fine centuries.

The Royals, who had eight players that had come through the Worcestershire ranks in their team, hit their highest-ever 40-over score, 376-6, not bad for the worst side in county cricket as they recorded a 90-run win in front of the cameras.

“It was David against Goliath at Surrey and we spoilt their party,” director of cricket Steve Rhodes beamed.

“We have got some good young kids in our team. Obviously it is good to beat any side that Kevin Pietersen plays in, because he is such a good player.

“It is very satisfying when we beat these big teams we have a good bunch of players who have worked extremely hard.

“I talked to our lads before the Glamorgan win going through our batting line-up telling them if I was a bowler I wouldn’t fancy bowling against you lot.

“We have to take advantage of that and believe in that, because we are are a very strong batting outfit and hopefully a few attacks might be thinking that we do have some decent players.”

It just goes to show that you don’t necessarily need all the best players to succeed.

So in the words of Jim Royle: Worcestershire the worst side in county cricket, my ....
