KAREN Greenfield has again broken the ladies’ course record at Kidderminster Golf Club.

The new standard scratch score (SSS) for the ladies is 74 and Greenfield, who plays off a handicap of two, shot a gross score of 71 when winning the Nick Underwood Trophy.

Greenfield’s trophy-winning 42-point haul was five clear of second-placed Audrey Hewitt, while Jan Biggs was a shot further back in third.

The Russell Road-based club also hosted a senior pairs competition, which produced some high scores on a challenging course. Heavy rain in the afternoon meant only 38 pairs out of 92 scored par or better.

Kidderminster’s John Beasley and Mike Dyer (43 points) held off the challenge of Mervyn Billingham (Kidderminster) and Robert Billingham (Droitwich) by just one point.

Bob Cummings and R Young (Kidderminster) were third on count-back, while M Westbury and T Sharp (Enville) were fourth.

John Parsons and Judy Taylor claimed the club’s T Harman Smith Foursomes Trophy.

The pair’s 38-point total was two clear of second-placed Jim and Jean Caddick, who were two ahead of Chris and Pat Clarke.

Sixteen-year-old Henry James, this year’s junior county captain, won Kidderminster’s Eric Knight club championship.

Played over 36 holes off scratch, the competition is for golfers with handicaps from nought up to 10.

James — one of the youngest winners of this trophy — shot a two-round total of 148. Rob Bradshaw (149) was second, with Scott Mason (150) in third.

The club’s junior cup, also played off scratch and over 36 holes, is for golfers with handicaps from 11 to 28.

Lee Shuck (162) won the title ahead of Roger Dobson, who took second on count-back from Andrew Thomas after they both carded 168s.
