Worcestershire aim to keep promotion hopes alive

WORCESTERSHIRE head to Middlesex tomorrow (10.30) looking to maintain their charge for an immediate return to the LV= County Championship top flight.

The New Road side currently sit in third place in Division Two with two games remaining of the campaign.

Steve Rhodes’ men need to ensure they claim three more points than promotion rivals and second-placed Glamorgan, who face Surrey at The Oval this week, to keep their hopes alive for the final round of games.

For the County to be in with a chance of promotion with such an inexperienced squad is a fine achievement.

Worcestershire already have two batsmen, Alexei Kervezee and Daryl Mitchell, who have passed 1,000 runs for the season with Moeen Ali needing just 26 to become the third.

Alan Richardson makes his Lord’s return after leaving Middlesex last year, requiring just two more wickets to reach 50 for the campaign.

Former skipper Vikram Solanki needs 58 runs to pass 15,000 first-class runs, while all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan is 85 short of 3,000.

Worcestershire (from): Mitchell (capt), Wheeldon, Solanki, Moeen, Kervezee, Shakib, Cameron, Andrew, Cox (wkt), Mason, Richardson, Shantry.
