CHAIRMAN Anthony Hampson has praised the efforts of Worcester City fans in making the club a better place.

There is a new-found optimism around St George’s Lane, borne out of entertaining football on the pitch and an increase in turnover.

Crowds have increased, with 1,070 turning up for Saturday’s 2-2 draw against Nuneaton Town, following on from the 886 against Solihull Moors on Bank Holiday Monday.

The Solihull game also saw the club shop take more money than it had during the majority of the last campaign.

It all makes for happier times at City and Hampson said: “I am delighted with the new-look squad and the attitude that the playing staff have taken to play attractive football.

“This is reflecting on the attendances for matches and gives a well needed fillip for those involved at all levels at the club.

“This also, of course, provides the club with much needed additional revenues.

“My thanks goes to all those that have supported the new initiatives that I feel have turned our fortunes round.”

With attendances above the 650 budgeted for, Hampson has also not ruled out freeing up future funds for manager Carl Heeley.

The chairman added: “The playing budget is under constant review and any discussions with regard to additional players will be discussed with manager Carl Heeley as the season progresses.”

Meanwhile, left-back Shabir Khan will have a scan on his knee this week but will be out of Saturday’s trip to Blyth Spartans.

Boss Heeley said: “Shab’s improving, the swelling is going down and the movement’s coming back so that’s a positive sign but it’s still a little bit early.”

Centre-half Tom Evans (knee) should be fit for the weekend after missing the Nuneaton draw, while midfielder Neil Cartwright is also expected to be OK after pulling up on Saturay with a tight calf.
