IN-FORM striker Mark Danks says he has made the best start to a campaign for six years.

Since returning to St George’s Lane after two seasons away, the 26-year-old has been a revelation for Carl Heeley’s men, scoring five goals in his first seven matches.

His latest was a magnificent curling strike in Saturday’s 2-2 Blue Square Bet North draw against Nuneaton Town.

He has also formed a formidable partnership with Danny Glover, who has chipped in with two goals and several assists.

Although Danks believes there is plenty more to come, he is happy to be among the goals with under a month of the campaign gone.

He said: “I always joke with my brother that I never start a season well because of injury or something and it’s usually October before I begin scoring.

“I looked away at the last minute on Saturday because I was expecting it to hit the post and come back out so I was more happy that it went in but I would take a couple of tap-ins over that.

“For me, it’s the best start I have had in six years, so it’s nice to have scored five goals in seven games.

“The first four matches I was happy with but I am disappointed with the last three and I need to improve. I am mature enough these days to know that it can change.”

City’s impressive start to the campaign has seen them start occupying positions in the top half of the league and Danks feels it is deserved.

He is also delighted to see the feel-good factor return to St George’s Lane following a summer of optimism.

The striker, who was at Northwich Victoria last season, said: “I think if we said we are quite surprised with how we have started that would be under-selling ourselves but we have ridden our luck where, previously, we would have lost.

“At Vauxhall Motors, for example, they have always scored first and killed teams off and to come back shows the character we have got in the side.

“You need it at this level because teams have got the players and can always take the lead against you.

“Nobody would have bet on Workington reaching the play-offs last season so why can’t it be us?”

“It is perhaps too early to start thinking about that but where’s the harm in dreaming?

Danks added: “As the season goes on, time will tell but I don’t think we have really been troubled, apart from at Eastwood.”
