ANDY Short and Will Betts both grabbed first-half tries as battling Worcester Warriors ‘A’ were edged out 26-14 by Leeds in the ‘A’ League.

England Under-20 ace Short crossed for a first-half try after 27 minutes as the teams were deadlocked 7-7 at the break.

A score from lock Betts five minutes after the re-start, which was converted by Willie Walker, gave Worcester a 14-7 lead.

However, Leeds fought back and three further tries saw them take the opening day victory.

Centre Greg King impressed with a number of line breaks, while hooker Chris Fortey led the team well with head coach Richard Hill and forwards coach Phil Davies among those watching in the crowd.

Warriors played most of the rugby and showed good intent to play regardless of the result, with a positive start to the season for a number of players.

But the team was not clinical enough and will now look to put that right when they Northampton Wanderers next week.
