DROITWICH Dolphins juniors have been promoted to Nuneaton League Division One following a superb display at the finals in Wolverhampton.

The league includes 66 teams within a 50-mile radius of Nuneaton and is the most important for young competition swimmers.

This is the first promotion in the club’s history and the 36-strong squad had to beat off strong opposition.

Sam Cave, 12, set a new competition record of 31.79 seconds for the boys’ 50-metre butterfly, while Ruth Hadley, 12, did likewise with 32.20 in the girls’ 50m butterfly.

The eight-strong boys’ mixed age cannon team won in two minutes 15.46 seconds.

Other wins came from Chris Osborne, nine, in the 25m breaststroke, Aaron Biddle, 12, in the 50m backstroke and Cave, 12, in the 50m breaststroke.

Relay wins were secured by the 12 year girls’ freestyle relay of Hadley, Sam Gearey, Rachel Bradley and Annie Scott.

The 12 year boys’ freestyle team of Cave, Sam Heywood, Biddle and Tim Quiney also won but narrowly missed out on a competition record.

Head coach Sue Marsh, together with Lynne West, Alison Whiteman and Chris Hadley, congratulated all the swimmers for their performances in the three rounds leading up to and the finals.
