WORCESTER City are focused on progressing in the FA Cup and not just for the financial rewards.

City visit Blue Square Bet North rivals Boston United in the second qualifying round today (3pm) with £4,500 in prize money going to the winners.

There is also a share of the gate receipts from the Jakemans Stadium clash, not to mention the proceeds of a possible replay at St George’s Lane on Monday night.

It all adds up to a potential bumper pay-day for City but manager Carl Heeley says he is not thinking of the cash.

He wants his players to progress as far as they can in the competition, with three victories needed to reach the first round proper.

“The money is important but, the players’ are focusing on what the FA Cup can give us in terms of exposure,” he said.

“We want to go on and reach the competition proper and pit our wits against league clubs.

“I am not interested in the money aspect. It’s important and we are not detracting from that. The directors will consider the money — players just concentrate on the football side.

“I believe my players can win the game, we are playing a team at the same level as us. We can beat any team at this level if we play to our potential.”

Chairman Anthony Hampson knows how vital the cup cash is to City and has not ruled out the possibility of freeing any earned to bolster the squad.

He added: “Like all games that attract prize money of this nature, it will be important for us to win outright or at least draw to force a replay.

“With increased gates at present it would be great to reward our supporters that way.

“As regards strengthening the team, additional income certainly makes these choices easier for us with the final decision left with the manager who at the moment is working prudently to budget.”

Meanwhile, further medical advice is being sought over Shabir Khan’s knee injury but there is better news for centre-half Rob Elvins as he continues his recovery from a broken foot.

The former Aldershot player has started light jogging but is not yet ready to return.
