WORCESTER Rowing Club toasted a successful fund-raising initiative with a naming ceremony for three new boats.

The junior section raised £9,208 through money-spinning ideas from members and their parents, a club committee donation and contributions from six Worcestershire county councillors.

Two new junior single scull lightweight boats were named after former captain and current coach Peter Hennessey and juniors co-ordinator Peter Powell.

Worcester’s talented international competitor Claire Crozier was honoured with an adult four-person boat produced by Janousek and life membership of the club.

It was a proud day for the 70-strong junior section and their former captain Hannah Johnson, who was heavily involved in the fund-raising.

Councillors John Cairns, Andy Roberts and Lucy Hodgson were all at the ceremony, while Susan Askin, Allah Ditta and Simon Geraghty also provided donations via the Positive Activities for Young People scheme.

Worcester are holding a small boats head on Sunday with the first race at around 11.30am.
