WORCESTER Seconds picked up a crucial win in their Birmingham League division two survival battle when they sealed victory away at St Georges.

Going into the game, Worcester were languishing second from bottom in the table, but they produced a fine performance to secure a 116-run win. Not only did the Norton-based side pick up 24 valuable points to lift them up to fourth from bottom, but they have also scooped our Team of the Week award.

They win a box of Fearnley cricket balls, worth £90, for their efforts.

The rain-affected victory meant that Worcester leap-frogged Telford-based St Georges, who collected just four points from the match.

Worcester batted first and were bowled out for 217, but then the heavens opened and St Georges were set a revised total of 108 from 25 overs.

Luckily for the visitors, their bowlers were on song on the day and they dismissed the opposition for 101.

Second XI skipper Ashley Brown was delighted with the win and hopes to use it as a springboard to more success.

He said: "We were second from bottom in the league going into the game and we had quite a depleted side, but vice-captain Luke Boulton won the toss and decided to bat.

Mike Genever and Dan Tarver got us off to a good start and Luke and Ollie Peppiatt carried on the good work, both scoring 40s.

"Veteran Bryan Clarke added 21 not out at the end, but he then did the damage with the ball, taking 6-44 to seal the win."

Despite their lowly position, the result was Worcester's second win in the last three weeks and Brown believes his side can move away from the wrong end of the table.

"We are playing Tamworth this weekend and they are second in the league, so it will be a tough game," he added.

"But I am confident we can finish outside of the two relegation spots as we have a few players who are back from university coming into the team."
