THE ladies’ section of Worcester Golf and Country Club have welcomed a new captain.

Former headmistress of Christopher Whitehead Girls School, Helen Olds, has taken over at the helm of the Boughton Park course.

She was presented with a bouquet of flowers by club captain Julian Gadd.

Meanwhile, the men’s section played their last qualifying competition of the season in the form of a stableford competition.

Steve Jenkins claimed his first tournament of the season, winning Division One with 40 points.

Jenkins, who plays off six, pushed Mark Dewey (11) into second spot on count-back, while Ken Murton (six) was third with 38 points.

Alan Courtney (13) topped Division Two with 38 points, but the minor placings were decided on count-back.

Mick George (19) was second with 37 points, the same score as Guy Taylor (24), who ended up third.

The popular pre-Christmas turkey trot competitions commenced with large turn-outs for both days.

The Saturday competition was a better-ball stableford, which saw Paul Barwick and Steve Brown, on 44 points, taking top spot in Division One.

Antony Ottway and Andy Oliver also had 44 points, as did Paul Clarke and Richard Wylde, so count-back came into force to decide these placings.

Alan Williams and Peter Tredwell took Division Two with 44 points with Russ Mason and Ian Gardner runners-up on 42.

Bob Stapleton and Paul Connolly were third, also on 42 points.

Better-ball medal was the format for the Sunday with some low scores being recorded. Dean Napper and Colin Webb were first with a nett 57, pushing Merv Smith and Mark Dancox into second on count-back.

Three pairs recorded nett 58s, so count-back decided the prizes between Tony Sanders and Simon Secretan, who were third, Kevin Truby and Duncan Macpherson (fourth) and Paul Davis and Andy Bradley (fifth).
