WORCESTER Wolves returned to winning ways by demolishing Worthing Thunder 98-59 in the British Basketball League at the University of Worcester.

After four consecutive losses, Wolves were badly in need of a confidence-boosting performance against one of the BBL’s lowest-placed teams.

Recent signing, England international Sam Cricelli, came into the starting line up for his home debut and made an immediate impact with a quick eight points in a first quarter that ended with Worcester in front at 25-17.

Midway through the second period, with Wolves leading 36-22, Justin Dobbins picked up his third foul meaning he had to take a place on the bench.

This allowed more room close to the basket for Thunder’s ex-Wolves centre Shaun Durant, and helped the visitors to briefly threaten a comeback.

However, with Cricelli once more coming to the fore, Worthing were held at bay, with the first-half ending 45-33 in Wolves favour.

The second-half began with consecutive long-range scores from Danny Gilbert. Once Rod Middleton and Michael Creppy also joined in the outside attack on the Thunder basket, the game was effectively won.

Entering the last quarter with a massive 73-44 advantage, Wolves coach Paul James took the opportunity to give increased court time to some of his younger players.

Greek under 20 international John Stoukas impressed when scoring with his first touch of the ball and young English guard Luke Sanders also got in on the action with a season-high seven points.

James said: “I was delighted with the performance. Our new guys Sam Cricelli and Michael Creppy, are bringing lots of energy to the team, so I hope we can go on from here.”

Leading scorers for Wolves were Gilbert with 22 points and Cricelli with 15. Durant led the scoring for Worthing with 20 points.
