WORCESTER Warriors head coach Richard Hill is still searching for a full 80-minute performance from his side after they once again switched off in the closing stages of a game.

The Sixways crowd had been treated to some superb rugby from the hosts for an hour but, for some reason, Warriors went to sleep and allowed London Welsh to snatch a bonus point with four tries in the last 20 minutes.

Hill said: “I thought we would get the full 80-minute performance, so it is frustrating that we didn’t do that.

“We talked to the bench players and said that whoever goes on has to produce the energy and make sure we go on and keep scoring rather than conceding — that didn’t happen and we made some sloppy decisions.

“We didn’t get much ball in the last 20 minutes, but there were some times when we were just too sloppy and did things in the second-half that we wouldn’t have done in the first. We needed more control, but got loose and let them back into the game.”

The Worcester chief added: “There were 60 minutes of top-quality rugby and, in the last 20 minutes — like against Nottingham last week, it was disappointing to let them in for several tries.

“We were outstanding for the first 40 minutes, pretty faultless really and I couldn’t pick our players up on too much.

“We were clinical — the set-piece was good, the backs were on fire to make use of all the opportunities we created and defensively we were very secure.

“I let it go for 10-15 minutes in the second-half before making the replacements and we scored another try to go 39-3 ahead. We were so far on top at that point — it was excellent, but it was disappointing to concede those tries at the end.

“London Welsh are dangerous — at the end, they threw it around everywhere and attacked from deep. They scored some very good tries.”

Despite allowing their opponents to claim a point from the game, Hill feels the manner in which his side dominated for the first hour will have had a psychological effect on Welsh ahead of a possible play-off meeting.

He said: “I think it was still a big win psychologically. I spoke to (London Welsh coaches) Phil Greening and Mike Friday after the game and they saw that, in the first 60 minutes, they weren’t in the game and we out-played them.

“When we get our heads on and concentrate, no team can stop us. They were just desperate to get those four tries and a bonus point — they had a real incentive because they want to finish third.

“We know that we have still got some work to do. The ending will stimulate us and make us angry — I am not happy about what happened and neither are the bench players because it reflects badly on them.”
