WORCESTER Wanderers entertained in-form Camp Hill at Weston’s Fields and were beaten 26-12 in an entertaining Midlands One (West) game.

The strong cross-field wind made kicking difficult, but the conditions were otherwise good.

Camp Hill started strongly with direct running at the Wanderers’ defence, but the hosts saw off the early challenge and both sides tried to play with the ball in hand.

The visitors took the lead with a well-worked try. Following an extended period of possession, their winger was released in space and the covering defence was breached.

From the re-start, Camp Hill squandered an opportunity to extend their lead when a penalty was pushed wide of the target.

Wanderers came back into the game, but were undone by an interception try as an attempted off-load was neatly taken by Camp Hill, who extended their lead.

Wanderers secured possession from the re-start and launched an attack which resulted in a scrum five metres from the Camp Hill line.

The strike was clean and the Wanderers scrum splintered the Camp Hill eight to allow Dave Merlin to score a good team try. Greg Fincher added the conversion.

Wanderers looked to press again and a chip over the top from Ross Coombes was charged down inside the Camp Hill 22. The visitors exploited Wanderers’ stretched defence to score a converted try.

The Camp Hill midfield defence denied Wanderers space and time as they struggled to get over the gain-line and another attempted off-load was intercepted for a try and conversion to seemingly put the game beyond the home side.

Wanderers, however, were not done and continued to take the game to Camp Hill. They were rewarded when wing Chris Jenkinson managed to get outside his opposite number and squeeze over in the corner for an unconverted score.

The city side battled away in search of a bonus point, but Camp Hill kept them out.
