DANNY Glover fired a fine hat-trick as Worcester City defeated Hyde in a St George’s Lane thriller.

City stunned their visitors with three goals in six first-half minutes, including two from the all-action Glover, but Hyde hit back with two of their own in a four-minute spell before the half-hour.

Glover had to wait until the 73rd minute for his third and that made it two wins in three days, following Saturday's 1-0 win over Stalybridge, to lift Carl Heeley’s team to 10th in Blue Square Bet North.

Dean Coleman had already saved from Danny Hudson before City got the ball rolling with an eighth-minute goal against the run of play.

Kevin O’Connor whipped in an excellent cross from the left and Glover rose to plant a header beyond Kyle Clancy.

Inspired, Heeley’s men proceeded to run Hyde ragged and doubled their advantage four minutes later. Captain Ryan Clarke’s free-kick was headed on by Rob Elvins and Glover swept the ball home.

Two minutes later and City had a third as Gavin Hurren floated in a free-kick from deep and Rob Elvins arrived at the far post, controlled the ball superbly and fired past Clancy.

Worcester, who had new signing Josh Quaynor at left-back in the absence of Tom Evans (ankle) and Neil Cartwright (back), were buzzing and might have added a fourth moments later but Mark Danks lifted his effort over the advancing Clancy.

But, as quickly as City had established the lead, so they contrived to almost throw it away and let Hyde back into the game. The visitors found space all over the pitch and had the hosts chasing shadows for much of the remainder of the half.

Neil Tolson’s side reduced their arrears in the 23rd minute when Kevin Holsgrove burst forward, brushed aside several challenges and rifled a terrific left-foot shot into the bottom corner, leaving Coleman with no chance.

Hyde continued to cut through City, who had Hurren and Quaynor booked, and they got another back four minutes later. Lee Rick’s run into the box was not tracked, his shot was parried by Coleman at full-stretch and Chris Lynch tapped the ball home.

Still Hyde pressed forward and they were only denied an equaliser when Hurren cleared Lynch’s 44th minute effort from inside the six-yard box after Scott McNiven’s quick free-kick had caught City napping.

The second-half was less dramatic but Clancy denied Glover early on and Hurren fizzed an effort inches wide, while Hudson had a shot blocked for the visitors.

Glover, however, finally completed a deserved a hat-trick when he finished off a fine move from left to right with a fierce left-foot strike following Ward’s cross.
