SPORTS achievements have been recognised by Worcester Triathlon Club at their annual awards ceremony.

Club champions were Richard Gourlay and Michelle Parsons, while the triathletes of the year accolades went to Tom Watts and Ceris Styler.

The international award went to Kevin May, who completed three Ironman events, including a sub-10 hour finish in Switzerland.

The Arran Stephens award for the most improved triathlete went to Neil Crump, who did 20 endurance races to raise money for research into multiple sclerosis.

The Howard Peters award for the fun race at Top Barn Farm was handed to Lisa Powell and Ethan Hunter.

Rachel Powell was the Scimitar Sports most improved junior, while Nixie Turner, who won the West Midlands TriStar Two series, took the gong for best female junior performance.

David Jubb, who claimed the West Midlands youth series, picked up the junior male performance award.

Volunteers Lisa Powell, Chris Powell, Andy Turner, Chas Taylor, Phil Parsons and Les Bailey received chairman’s Good Egg awards for their contributions to the running of the club.

Bromsgrove-born Tom Lowe presented the prizes in the evening at Vale Golf Club and signed a T-shirt, which raised £33 for club funds.

The former army recruit, who broke the British record with eight hours 11 minutes 44 seconds for third spot in his first Ironman event in Arizona last year, was also guest speaker.

Worcester chairman Duncan Jenkins said: “Our members represent Worcestershire across the UK and internationally and it was great to see such a good turn-out to celebrate a fantastic year for us in 2010 and, in particular, to see so many of our junior members taking part in the evening.

“We are looking forward to another successful season this year.”

Club membership stands at a high of more than 100, reflected in 80-plus attending the evening, which included a dinner-dance.

The club's winter aquathlon in Worcester on Sunday has been cancelled.
