DROITWICH Spa got their Worcestershire League Division One season off to a winning start with a comprehensive eight-wicket defeat of Romsley and Hunnington.

After winning the toss, Spa’s captain Jerome Connor asked his bowlers to put pressure on a Romsley side short of a number of key players.

Romsley started well despite an aggressive spell by Mike Rogers and controlled swing bowling from Karl Goddard.

The first wicket of the season fell to Jake Young thanks to Ian Cottrill’s catch but the introduction of Martyn Davies changed the game.

His swing bowling proved too tempting and the wickets began to fall.

Romsley, in a good position at 86-1, self-destructed as they lost seven wickets for 15 runs.

Davies took 5-21 with Rogers ripping through the lower order with 4-31 as Romsley fell for 147.

Spa opener Neil Wright scored 10 from the first over and Davies performed his support role well.

Spa raced to 50 from just six overs and, though Wright departed for 42, skipper Jerome Connor came in to blast 27.

Cottrill added 10 not out alongside Davies’ 61no in their winning 148-2 from 22 overs.
