WORCESTER City’s summer recruitment continues apace following the acquisition of striker Mike Symons.

The 6ft 3ins target man has agreed a one-year deal at St George’s Lane following his release from Blue Square Bet North rivals Gloucester City.

Symons spent three years with the Tigers, playing against Worcester last season, and scored seven goals .

Manager Carl Heeley has fought off competition from other clubs for his signature and believes he will be a major asset to the club.

The City boss said: “He im-pressed me last season, he’s a big strong lad and he gets hold of the ball.

“He didn’t have the greatest goal-scoring return last season but I think he’s capable of scoring goals with a change of style. I think our style of football will suit him.

“We desperately needed a big target man but he’s also got a great touch. Mike works hard and he’s got a bit more to him than that.

“He runs at defenders and if you asked most of the centre-halves in our league he would be up there as one of the most difficult to defend against.”

Symons is the third player to join City in the space of a week following the arrival of fellow forward Luke Corbett and goalkeeper Jimmy Dormand.

The 24-year-old began his career at Bristol City before spells with Bideford Town and Cirencester.

Heeley has wasted little time in bolstering his squad ahead of the 2011/12 campaign and, like last summer, has landed key targets.

He is now likely to seek answers from the players currently pondering offers to stay at City for another year.

Midfielder Gary Walker and utility player Neil Cartwright are both yet to commit, while leading scorer Danny Glover has been talking to another club.
