WORCESTER Athletic Club continued their unbeaten Midland Track and Field League season by winning their home match at Nunnery Wood.

The city club made it three victories in a row in Division Six after a close encounter when the lead changed hands several times.

Worcester stretched away over the final events to record 388 points, ahead of county rivals Kidderminster and Stourport with 351.

Hereford and County propped up the table with 209 behind Harborough (250), Sutton-in-Ashfield (286) and Abingdon Amblers (322).

Worcester were missing seven athletes competing at the English Schools Championships as well as another three due to holidays.

A fine team effort by young athletes making their senior debuts and others covering non-specialist events meant the team prospered.

There will be healthy competition for places for the final match at Stourport on August 14.

Typifying the team spirit on the day were Andy Kinney and Molly Browne.

Kinney competed in the 200-metres, 400m, 400m hurdles, long jump, javelin and both relays after injury struck fellow sprinter Paul Maguire.

Despite a hamstring injury, Maguire managed second place in the ‘A’ 200m.

Browne arrived back from a holiday in Greece only one hour before competing in the 3,000m and the dedicated women’s captain went on to run a fine third leg in the 4x400m relay.

Among the busiest athletes on the day were Melanie Garland and Kate Martin who competed in all four throws with the former also winning the ‘B’ long jump.

Millie Barnes, Olivia Deehan, Tracy Miles and Clare Jones completed the women’s team.

Paige Salisbury, Emma Hill and Deehan all made their senior debuts.

Nick Daniel, Quentin Elmhirst and Pete Stewart covered the men’s throws with Dave Hall, Dave O’Brien, Phil Bullock and Warren Miles rounding off the team.

Individual winners: Salisbury (100m ‘A’, 200m ‘A’, 4x100m relay), Hill (100m ‘B’, 200m ‘B’, 4x100m relay), Hannah Button (800m ‘B’), Kinney (200m ‘B’, 400m hurdles ‘B’, long jump ‘B’, 4x100m relay), Edwin Elmhirst (400m ‘B’, high jump ‘A’, 4x100m relay), Tom Stock (800m ‘B’), Lewis Roberts (1,500m ‘A’), Josh Carr (1,500m ‘B’), Marc Flannery (discus ‘B’), Adam Higgins (high jump ‘B’), Becky Donnelly (pole vault, 4x100 relay), Shalayna Hutchinson (high jump ‘B’, 4x100 relay), Hugo Hickson (4x100 relay) and Ryan Upfield (4x100 relay).
