PERSHORE club ace Mark Rowe has been crowned Great Britain open men’s over 45s clay court doubles tennis champion.

With Neil Howitt from Gloucestershire, Rowe triumphed at the West Hampshire Club in Bournemouth.

Rowe and Howitt, seeded fifth, received a bye in the first round before beating David Brown (Yorkshire) and Mats Haglund (Sweden) 6-4, 6-1.

They defeated Athol Hoets (South Africa) and Andrew Sharp (Surrey) 6-3, 6-2 in the last eight and reached the final after seeing off Lars Hansen (Denmark) and Philip Shrimpton (Hampshire) 6-3, 6-0.

In the final, the pair saw off Stephen Walter and Anthony Illingworth (Hertfordshire) 2-6, 6-2, 6-2.

It is Rowe’s first British title after his England over 45s call-up earlier in the year.
