MARTYN Davies took five wickets as Droitwich Spa recorded a comprehensive 150-run triumph over basement side Romsley and Hunnington in Worcestershire League Division One.

Having only scored 17 opening the batting, the all-rounder redeemed himself with 5-47 as Romsley were skittled for 139.

The visitors asked Droitwich to bat first and stand-in opener Max Young took his chance, scoring 85 as his side posted 289-8 from their 50 overs.

Once Davies had departed, captain Jerome Connor stabilised the innings and gave Droitwich the platform they needed. He finished on 51 and, along with Young, helped the hosts to 180-3 after 30 overs.

Paul Bryan was caught and bowled for 13 but Ian Cottrill brought up his half-century from only 30 balls en route to 58.

Droitwich made a dream start after tea as Mike Rogers removed opener Imran Riaz (39), caught behind by Andy Fletcher, before Rogers’ change of pace claimed two further wickets to put Romsley in trouble at 30-3.

The introduction of the slow bowlers was the turning point as spinner Davies collected five wickets.

He was ably supported in the field by Connor as he took two good catches, before veteran Martin Woodward took the final two wickets to give Spa a valuable win and move them further away from the danger zone.
