EVESHAM United are hoping to raise up to £30,000 from tomorrow’s match against Manchester United legends.

The Robins welcome a team featuring Frank Stapleton and Sammy McIlroy to the town’s high school (2pm) and, despite a change of venue, organisers predict a crowd of more than 2,000 at Four Pools Road.

The fixture was originally scheduled to form the grand opening of the club’s new £2million ground at Cheltenham Road but roadworks connecting an adjacent roundabout to the site have not been finished.

Old Trafford legends from the 1980s and 1990s, including David May, Clayton Blackmore and Arthur Albiston, will battle it out with Robins’ stars of the past.

Evesham will be captained by Tim Hall and feature former players such as Simon Brain and Gary Stevens as well as past managers Phil Mullen and Dave Busst.

The Manchester United legends will also be at the evening dinner and fund-raising auction at the school.

Former Evesham boss and event organiser Mick Brennan said: “We’re pretty sure there is going to be over 2,000 tickets sold for the match. We’re hoping to raise about £30,000 for the club from the day.

“It’s all about raising money and for the people of Evesham to get the chance to see some of Manchester United’s legends.”

Current Evesham manager Paul West added: “Hopefully, a lot of people will come along to see an Evesham United team play in the town, which is quite rare.

“It would have been a dream to have this game as the opening of the new ground but it wasn’t to be.”

Tickets for the match, priced £10, will be available on the gate.

Evesham will send a team of youngsters and trialists to Alcester Town for a friendly tonight (7pm).
