WORCESTER’S Simon Williams hopes to step up his paddling progress after being selected for the national development training camp.

The 15-year-old has produced strong displays at national regattas this season to earn his chance to impress selectors even further.

The development squad brings promising Great Britain competitors together to get a taste of what might be in store over the next few years.

Williams will train at the National Watersports Centre in Nottingham with other under 16s from across the country. The national junior coaches will look out for those with the mental attitudes and physical attributes that stand out from the crowd.

Williams continues to work hard in his training group atWorcester Canoe Club after being inspired by team-mate, Jonny Tye, 18, an international junior paddler and national champion.

Tye said: “Simon has shown great commitment, enthusiasm and hard work over the last few years and has progressed hugely. He has started to build the foundations for a strong junior career. I am confident he is one to watch for the future.”

Worcester members went to Ironbridge for the Hasler race which included negotiating the rapids.

Many paddlers capsized at that point and had to retire.

But Williams and Anker Valley paddler Jordi Eccles managed to stay upright in their K2 and secured first place to be promoted to division three.

Dave Smith was second in his K1 in division four.
