FANS of leading Midlands clubs are being urged to adopt Worcester City as their second team.

The St George’s Lane outfit are throwing their support behind national initiative Non-League Day on Saturday in a bid to attract more people through the gates.

Due to the international break, there are no Premier League or Championship fixtures, switching attention to the lower leagues.

City host Corby Town in Blue Square Bet North (3pm) and are admitting season ticket holders of teams in the top two divisions for £5.

Under 16s can watch for free, while members of the armed forces and emergency services will also not have to pay.

In addition, there will be competitions, including a tournament involving junior club St John’s Colts at 1pm.

Coming hot on the heels of a successful open evening at the Lane, it aims to raise the club’s profile within the city Director Rich Widdowson said: “We are trying to get as many people in to watch the game as we can and make people aware we are here.

“One of our sponsors’ contacts came down and really enjoyed it but he had no idea we were here. He’d lived in Worcester for two years and didn’t know we had a team. We assume everybody knows about us but they don’t.”

Supporters’ trust secretary Rob Crean added: “The idea is to attract fans who support the big teams but live locally to try non-league football, and City in particular, on this one day when their team won’t be playing.

“If they adopt City as their alternative Saturday fix of football, then that’s the ideal outcome.”
