PERSHORE Phoenix Dragon Boat Racing Club celebrated a successful 2011 season in style at Worcester’s Sixways Stadium with their awards ceremony.

Head coach Dave Cole received a special accolade and was praised by club chairman Don James for “inspirational leadership and encouragement”.

Paddler Jonathan Small received the Captain’s Award for his exceptional service as club secretary.

Lorna Burton was awarded the commitment trophy and Debbie Johnson the most improved paddler award, while Emily Forrest was drummer of the year.

Jamie Forrest, who was in the Great Britain under 18s squad who competed at this year’s World Dragon Boat Championships in Florida, was chosen by members to win the Paddler of the Year Cup. It was presented to him by GB senior coach Alan Parfrey.

Club captain Andrew Forrest said: “The club has proven to be a strong and cohesive unit and just had its best racing season ever, culminating in coming 10th in the country at the National Championships last month after winning four trophies at six BDA events.” He also congratulated team member Ian Wyllie for his work with Worcester Explorer Scouts who won a national trophy this year.

Cole said: “Members had trained hard all season and shown commitment and determination and deserved their success.”

The club have been awarded a Sportivate grant to run dragon boat courses for 14 to 25-year-olds.
