Sargeant: Decent debut, with some good handling, but might have done better with Hyde’s first goal. 6

Clarke: Deployed at right-back and continually bombed forward down the flank to good effect. 7

Rowe: Defended well, despite City conceding from a corner, and showed the strength in depth of the squad. 7

Ayres: Only lasted 18 minutes with the recurrence of a back problem and was replaced by Martyn Naylor. 5

Cartwright: Some superb runs down the left, crowned with good crosses. Was also inexplicably booked. 8

Thorley: Kept his cool for both penalties, dispatching them with aplomb. Influential throughout. 9

Elvins: Didn’t look entirely comfortable after being switched to the heart of defence once Naylor walked and suffered a late shoulder injury. 6

O’Connor: Worked his socks off from start to finish, dictated play and covered most of the pitch. 8

Edwards: Tried his best on the left but his crossing was not up to his usual standards. 6

Symons: Strong and determined, winning both penalties, although the second was highly debatable. 7

Carey-Bertram: Largely anonymous with few opportunities before being replaced by the lively Taylor. 6

Subs: Naylor 4 (for Ayres 18), Taylor 7 (for Carey-Bertram 60), Birley 7 (for Edwards 60). Not used: Brown, Smith.

Hyde (4-4-2): Carnell 7, Brizell 6, Griffin 7, Pearson 7, Hall 7, Birch 5, Worsley 4, Byrne 7, Fisher 8* (Broadbent 65, 7), Spencer 8 (Berkeley 65, 7), Poole 8 (Moses 78). Subs not used: Havern, Williams.

Man of the match: Tom Thorley — Another outstanding performance from the midfielder who was coolness personified with both penalties.
