WORCESTER City are not a one-man team, despite Mike Symons accounting for almost a third of their goals this season.
That is the view of manager Carl Heeley after watching the former Gloucester City hitman bag 15 of City’s 48 strikes that have hit the net in all competitions this term.
The 25-year-old is the only Worcester player to find the net in 2012, having been on target against his former employers, Vauxhall Motors and Halifax Town during January.
But he drew a blank against Colwyn Bay last Saturday and City ended up losing 1-0 at St George’s Lane, their fourth Blue Square Bet North defeat in a row.
However, manager Heeley insists they are not reliant on their leading marksman, who has bagged three times more goals than fellow strikers Simon Brown and Luke Corbett, with the latter currently plying his trade at Leamington.
Midfielder Tom Thorley has four, attacking midfielder Matt Birley three and forwards Danny Carey-Bertram and Michael Taylor two each.
“Symmo has scored the majority of our goals and if he doesn’t score there’s a question mark over whether we can play without him and score but I think we can,” Heeley said.
“We need our experienced players to stand up and grab the game by the scruff of the neck and make things happen rather than just hope for them to happen.
“I certainly won’t lose belief in the way we play and the quality we’ve got in the squad.
“We just need to grind out a win from somewhere and then, all of a sudden, we will start getting that belief back to go on another run.”
