WORCESTER City manager Carl Heeley has challenged Tom Thorley to reach double figures in the goalscoring charts this season.

Thorley scored his fifth penalty of the campaign as City recorded a 3-2 victory at Corby Town on Saturday, taking his overall tally to seven.

Heeley has called on his squad to support 15-goal leading marksman Mike Symons and the midfielder is now second on the list.

Thorley was joined on the scoresheet by Michael Taylor and substitute Phil Green as Worcester won for the third game in a row in Blue Square Bet North.

“Tom has a 100 per cent record on penalties and that’s seven goals for him now, with five penalties, and that’s a decent return,” the City manager said.

“He’s got to be looking to try and push that towards double figures.

“It was another tough game and, as I’ve said many times, you don’t get any easy games and certainly not away at Corby.

“We were very good value for the win, played extremely well and passed the ball around impressively. We’re pleased but it’s just one win.”

Heeley continued: “We bossed the game for long periods, created good opportunities and just felt if we kept going and passed the ball around we’d get our opportunities and that proved to be the case.

“Our philosophy is trying to pass the ball.

“We’ve got good technical players and it’s a bit of a crime to not utilise their strengths.

“Even when we haven’t been on good runs, I don’t think you can criticise the boys.

“They still try to play the game the right way. Winning breeds confidence.”

Heeley also feels January recruits Tyler Weir, Ellis Deeney and Greg Mills are proving their worth after naming an unchanged team for the third game running.

He added: “I certainly wasn’t going to panic when we went through January without picking up a win because I do believe in the players I have got at the club.

“We made changes because we felt we needed to and they were always going to take time to gel but they are good quality additions and players with good pedigrees.

“It was only going to be a matter of time before they started gelling and the fact that we’ve gone six games unbeaten is probably testament to those guys settling in.

“We have got to keep it going, believing in ourselves and working hard.”
