THERE have been some good Worcester City teams over the years.

Likewise, there have also been some average and downright poor ones as well — most notably during the ill-advised foray into Blue Square South.

But, on current form, you would surely have to cast your minds back a few years to find a better set of players to grace St George’s Lane than Carl Heeley’s current line-up.

Certainly one that is more pleasing on the eye.

I have been covering City for nearly six seasons and this is by far the best, and most exciting, team I have seen them produce.

There are plenty of fans who have seen far more games than myself who would also rate them highly.

Gainsborough, a side with play-off ambitions of their own and who saw off Nuneaton at the weekend, couldn’t live with Worcester on Monday night.

It was a similar story against Boston United 10 days ago and, to a slightly lesser extent, at Corby Town last Saturday.

City are in a rich vein of form and, crucially, have the momentum that could yet propel them into the Blue Square Bet North play-offs.

Even if it doesn’t, they are still serving up fine entertainment and, barring January’s blip, have been all season.

Heeley’s decision to inject new blood into the team raised a few eyebrows, mine included, at the turn of the year but, if anything, it has moved City to the next level. Full-back Tyler Weir and flying winger Greg Mills have rejuvenated the side, while Michael Taylor, a player City have had on their books since last summer, has been transformed since getting a run in the team.

The task now is convincing people that City are worth watching and have the potential to bring long overdue success to the club.

Despite having equalled their best run of the season — six games unbeaten at the weekend — only 693 showed up to see them make it seven on Monday, although the noise they made equated to far more.

In the social club afterwards, a fan said more Worcester people should come out to support this side and I can only agree with them.

There have been plenty of false dawns where Worcester are concerned and it would be easy for the casual fan to shrug and say, ‘they’ll mess it up, they always do’.

But there is far more to it than that. City have been crying out for a team to be proud of and now they have one. Reaching the play-offs would be a fantastic bonus.

There is a good team at the Lane these days and they deserve to play to a larger audience, starting with Saturday’s visit of Droylsden.

Don’t take it from me, take it from the fans that were there against Gainsborough, including this anonymous poster on an internet message board who said: “City are on fire at the moment — long may it keep on burning.”
