LEADING scorer Mike Symons has challenged Worcester City to go unbeaten for the rest of the season.

Symons netted his 16th goal of the season in Monday’s 2-1 win against Gainsborough Trinity to make it seven games without defeat in Blue Square Bet North.

The St George’s Lane success lifted City to within two points of the play-off places and Symons wants them to continue their rich run of form.

“That’s our fourth win in a row now so hopefully we can push on to Droylsden on Saturday, pick up another three points and drive on from there,” the striker said.

“Can we go unbeaten for the rest of the season? That’s our challenge.”

He added: “There’s nine games to go so we don’t want to get too carried away, we are just going to try and play football like we’ve done but I thought Monday was one of our best performances of the season.

“I thought the lads were great all over the park and the fans were fantastic, it was a great atmosphere.”

Symons’ goal against Gainsborough, two minutes before Greg Mills’ winner, was his first strike since the 2-1 loss at Halifax on January 14.

The former Gloucester hitman said: “I feel a bit happier now to get that goal to take the pressure off me a bit and hopefully now I can take that into Saturday and pick up another one if possible.

“There’s a great team ethic and Carl (Heeley) and Matt (Gardiner) are always encouraging us to perform and keep the ball on the deck.

“I had a good start to the season, they gave me the confidence to grow, and hopefully it will continue until the end of April.

“If I didn’t have the lads backing me up and getting me those chances I probably wouldn’t have scored the goals I have so it’s thanks to everyone involved.”
