MANAGER Carl Heeley says Worcester City are enjoying playing the role of underdogs in the Blue Square Bet North play-off chase.

City moved up a place to seventh after Tuesday’s 3-2 victory at Boston United although they remain four points adrift of fifth-placed Gainsborough.

However, with six games to go, they still have every chance of gate-crashing the end-of-season party and Heeley is relishing it.

He said: “The best thing that’s in our favour is nobody expects us to be there, we’re playing with no pressure and we’re just enjoying where we are in the league.

“We’ll win as many games as we can until the end of the season and see where that takes us.

“We don’t look at other results, we can’t do anything about them, all we’ve got to do is concentrate on our own performances and our own points because if we don’t put points on the board it’s irrelevant.”

Goals from Michael Taylor, Mike Symons – his 17th of the campaign - and Matt Birley earned Worcester the three points at York Street as they defeated the Pilgrims for the second time this month.

The City boss, whose side were 3-0 winners at St George’s Lane on March 3, added: “Boston is a big club and cracking place to come and play.

“We passed the ball around, were confident and 3-2 flattered them a little bit. I thought we were by far the better side and worthy of the three points.

“We don’t go anywhere to get a draw, we go to pick up three points and we’ve done it again which is brilliant.”

With Kevin O’Connor and Tom Thorley both missing, City turned to Tyler Weir and Rob Elvins in the centre of midfield, while right winger Birley also switched with Weir during the match.

Heeley said: “Tom and Kev are big players for us but we’ve got other big players and they’ve stepped up to the plate and been superb.

“Rob Elvins is very composed, holds his shape and does the ugly things and I thought the energy of Matt Birley and Tyler Weir was unbelievable.”

Taylor hobbled off 15 minutes from the end of the contest with an ankle injury but Heeley is hopeful the striker will be OK for Saturday’s trip to Harrogate Town.

The Worcester boss added: “He’s had a little knock and I am sure it will settle down but he’s got another goal, he’s won us a penalty and he strikes fear into opposing defenders, they are terrified of his pace.”
