WORCESTER City manager Carl Heeley says he is in no rush to make decisions on the future of players.

The St George’s Lane club finished seventh in Blue Square Bet North after losing 1-0 to Workington in the final match of the season last Saturday.

Next up is the process of agreeing new deals with players and also releasing personnel to make way for new signings to strengthen the squad.

Although talks are ongoing with several of the club’s key performers — top-scorer Mike Symons has already indicated his desire to stay — Heeley wants to take stock of the situation before acting.

He said: “We’ll have a bit of a debrief and see what we feel we need to do. There’s no rush.

“We’ll reflect on the season and take a bit of time, we’re in a position now where we’ve got players wanting to join us.

“When you’ve been struggling it’s difficult to convince the better players to come here because they think they’re going to struggle again.

“We’re not in that position now so hopefully we can sell the club a little bit better to them from a position of strength.”

As well as player-of-the-year Symons, City will be keen to secure the services of centre-half Jacob Rowe, who won the young player prize.

Midfielder lynchpin Tom Thorley and Kevin O’Connor would also be high on the list, along with keeper James Dormand and striker Michael Taylor.

Heeley added: “We’ve got some good players here and there’s going to be interest in them.

“We want to keep them but we’ll see, the aim is to retain as much of the squad as we can.”
