HEREFORD United face their day of destiny tomorrow as they bid to cling on to a place in the Foootball League.

The Bulls needs to beat promotion-chasing Torquay United in their final game at Edgar Street (3pm) and hope Barnet, two points above them in the table, do no better than a draw at Burton Albion.

After six years in the League, following their Conference play-off success in 2006, the stakes could not be higher. Nerves will be at breaking point, not least because Richard O’Kelly’s men are relying on results elsewhere to determine their fate.

But in a season of struggle, United come into the match on the back of their most remarkable result – last Saturday’s 3-0 win at third-placed Crawley Town.

Few would have predicted that outcome, secured via Yoann Arq-uin’s second-half brace and Joe Colbeck’s strike, even if Barnet’s 4-0 victory over Wimbledon stop-ped them climbing out of the bottom two.

O’Kelly, however, believes it was no less than his players have deserved and is looking for more of the same tomorrow.

He said: “It’s the best result since I have been here. It was a good performance but in a couple of games we have performed better than that and not had the rub of the green. I think we were due a little bit of luck but there was a lot of quality shown.

“On the training pitch, most of the performances the players have been putting in and the way they go about things has been exemplary. The problem is transferring it back to the pitch on a matchday.”

The Hereford manager added: “In some ways, it’s just another game; in other ways with the context, it’s a massive game. The unfortunate thing is our fate is not in our own hands, we have got to rely on somebody else.

“Barnet went to Wimbledon, who had a few injuries so they were not as strong as against Torquay the previous week. That was disappointing but Barnet go to Burton who are under temporary manager Gary Rowett, who is very competitive and wants them to do well. Hopefully Burton will put in a performance.

“If we can give a good display and do our jobs, then the outcome is in the lap of the gods.”

O’Kelly, who has no fresh injury concerns, is also calling on the club’s fans, some of whom turned up at Crawley in fancy dress last week, to be similarly vocal against the Gulls.

He added: “The travelling support last week was fantastic. Hopefully they will turn up tomorrow and be just as enthusiastic.”
