STRIKER Steve Guinan says winning promotion with Kidderminster Harriers would be the perfect way to bring the curtain down on his career.

The 36-year-old, who started out at Nottingham Forest in 1993, opted against retiring this summer for another season at Aggborough and a tilt at Blue Square Bet Premier honours.

Guinan, also the academy manager at Hartpury College in Gloucestershire, scored 10 goals for Kidderminster last season as Steve Burr’s men missed out on the division’s play-offs for the second year running.

The former Hereford United striker said: “It would be a nice way to go out with promotion.

“It would be nice to make it third time lucky, hopefully we can go one step further.

“I had 99 per cent decided I was going to retire but I had a chat with Steve Burr and he wanted me to put it off for another 12 months.

“Going for promotion again was the lure of it but the plan is definitely to call it a day after that.

“I was ready to call it a day but I talked about it with my family and they are supportive of me doing it.”

With Harriers finishing sixth for the past two seasons, Guinan says forcing their way into the play-offs has to be the target, despite having fewer resources than some of their rivals.

He added: “I think that’s the aim.

“Budget-wise they tend to over achieve every year but with getting so close to it the past couple of years, that has to be the aim.”
