FORMER Evesham United player David Accam could be playing Champions League football this season after signing for Swedish side Helsingborgs IF for 500,000 Euros.

The 21-year-old midfielder was one of three Ghanaian players – the others being Isaac Shaze and Sam Mensah – who were part of the Robins team that took the Southern League Premier Division by storm during the 2010-11 campaign.

Paul West, Evesham manager at the time, tried to keep the trio, who were all training at the Hartpury College Academy in Gloucestershire, but they joined fellow Swedish side Ostersunds FK last summer.

Accam has now moved to the country’s champions, while forward duo Shaze and Mensah remain with Ostersunds.

West said: “All three are very special footballers. During their time at Evesham we were thinking about winning the league with them. Everybody feared them. It was the best football I had seen at that level.

“I am really chuffed for David and I am sure the other two will have an opportunity.”
