WORCESTER City completed their pre-season programme with a dismal 2-2 draw at Leamington.

In an instantly forgettable friendly at the New Windmill, Leamington twice held the lead through a Stuart Whitehead own goal and Matt Dodd’s penalty but goals from Danny Glover and Charlie Reece pegged them back.

City lined up as they did against Shrewsbury, suggesting manager Carl Heeley has settled on the team that will take on Bradford Park Avenue next Saturday.

But the game never really got out of first gear – it was certainly Worcester’s most lacklustre showing in a while.

Most of that can likely be put down to wanting to escape unscathed ahead of the Blue Square Bet North opener following a pre-season that started at the beginning of July.

Yet, if a team is going to have an off day, they might as well have it when league points are not at stake.

Leamington took the lead after seven minutes when Whitehead diverted the ball past Glyn Thompson following a cross into the box.

It took until the 20th minute for Glover to register the visitors’ first shot on target and another 15 for the equaliser to arrive.

Reece got free on the right, he found Glover in the box and the striker produced a calm right-footed finish beyond Kevin Sawyer.

Generally, though, the passing from both sides was inaccurate which led to a contest with little fluidity.

Things improved slightly after the break with James Mace stinging the palms of Glyn Thompson from 35 yards.

Greg Mills, sporting his newly dyed hairstyle, then showed a turn of pace before drilling an effort into the side-netting.

Leamington might have taken the lead soon after but substitute Richard Batchelor’s header hit the post.

But the Brakes deservedly restored their advantage in the 68th minute from the penalty spot. Lee Ayres, who had only replaced Matt Breeze seven minutes earlier, tripped Batchelor in the area and former Worcester winger Dodd sent Thompson the wrong way from 12 yards.

It should have been three moments later but sub Lee Chilton poked the ball wide after the City defence had failed to deal with a routine cross.

The introduction of Michael Taylor livened Worcester up and he laid the equaliser on a plate for Reece in the six-yard box, the midfielder firing home via the hand of Sawyer and the bar.
