HEREFORD United moved back up to sixth place in the Blue Square Bet Premier after a tense 2-1 win over old rivals Woking at Edgar Street.

The Bulls managed to survive a late charge from the Cards following Kevin Betsy’s 81st-minute goal after leading 2-0 at half-time.

Ashley Sammons had given Hereford an early lead but all the talk at the interval was of a fine strike, just before the interval, by Sam Clucas. The 21-year-old raced into the Woking area to win the ball from defender Mike Cestor and then smashed a left-foot shot home from the edge of the box.

“I gambled on the flick-on and it’s gone through,” said Clucas. “The lad took a touch and I tackled him but didn’t know where the ball was going to land.

“Fortunately, it landed right in front of me, I shot straight away and it went in.

“I want to score as many goals as I can but overall it was a good team performance.”

Clucas added: “We lost a bit of confidence, losing two on the trot, but we knew we had the quality to bounce back and knew we would score goals. Now, hopefully, we can carry it on at Hyde on Saturday.”
