CAPTAIN Ben Schiffmann has heralded the team spirit at Worcester Nomads after winning promotion to the Birmingham League.

The Bransford -based club are preparing to step up a level after being crowned Worcestershire League Division One champions for the first time.

Nomads defeated Coombs Wood by eight wickets last Saturday to claim the title, seven points ahead of second-placed Pershore.

“It’s something we have had in our minds for a few years and we have been close on a couple of occasions but to finally win it is magnificent for everybody,” Schiffmann said. “It was a great day and all the hard work paid dividends in the end.

“From a personal point of view, it’s a great achievement for me and the club in general. “We have got a really good team spirit and everybody gets on really well and that has helped us to get the end result of winning the league.”

The skipper added: “It’s been an iffy season weather-wise but we pulled out some great team performances. “Everybody has chipped in along the way. For the second half of the season we have been undefeated.”

Nomads have battled with Pershore for most the of the season but finally edged out their rivals, who recorded a two-run win at Hagley, on the final day.

Schiffmann has faith in his players’ ability to make the step up and also believes the club is ready for life in the Birmingham League.

They were boosted this season by a £50,000 grant from Sport England which enabled them to make improvements to their pavilion.

“It’s been a hard few months, we have all worked hard to get to this stage to make it into the Birmingham Legaue,” he said. “We will have a couple of months to wind down and then start nets in January. We are prepared, we have got a good team as it is and one or two additions would be great.”

He added: “The ground is looking fantastic at the moment and there will be further improvements to the pavilion in the future.”
