Weir warns of contrast in style as Droylsden arrive at the Lane
TYLER Weir says Worcester City will face a stark contrast of styles when they take on Droylsden at St George’s Lane today (3pm).
Seven days ago, City saw their unbeaten start to the Blue Square Bet North campaign come to an end with a 1-0 defeat at Gainsborough Trinity.
On that occasion, Carl Heeley’s team were forced to defend for large periods as Trinity negated the midfield by pumping long balls forward from the back.
Although not pretty to watch, it was an example of sides in the division playing to their strengths in order to get three points.
City, however, have always been keen to stress their preference for a neat passing game and, by large, have enjoyed success with it.
Weir expects Droylsden to employ a similar type of game this afternoon as City aim for their first victory in three games to remain in the early play-off picture.
“We need to get three points out of that game to stay in the hunt,” the right-back said.
“They’re not doing too bad themselves but they like playing football so it will be totally different to the Gainsborough game.”
Meanwhile, teenage midfielder Josh Smith has joined Midland Alliance side Bridgnorth Town, managed by former City assistant boss Mark Clyde, but he will remain registered with Worcester.
His move follows a similar deal for striker Dan Polan, who has linked up with Stourport Swifts in the Midland Alliance.
The duo are unlikely to get games in the first team and the club feel they would benefit from playing at a lower level.
Striker Michael Taylor spent time with Swifts last season and has now established himself in the pecking order behind Mike Symons and Danny Glover.
n The supporters’ club are running a coach to the FA Cup game at Gornal Athletic next Saturday.
It leaves St George’s Lane at noon and seats are £7.
Call Keith Chambers on 07712-457698 to book a place.
Gornal booked the game with City after a shock 3-0 win at Evo-Stik Northern premier League Division One South side Sutton Coldfield.
