MORE than a century of Worcester City history will be celebrated at an exhibition in the Guildhall later this month.

Pictures charting the story of the club, in their 108th and last season at St George’s Lane, and showing famous matches go on display at the city centre venue on Saturday, September 29 between 9am and 1pm.

Chief among them will be images from the legendary FA Cup third round game of January 15, 1959, when City defeated Liverpool 2-1 and the fourth round defeat against Sheffield United, watched by a combined crowd in excess of 32,000.

City are calling on fans young and old, past and present to drop in and share in the memories of a ground soon to be consigned to history when it is pulled down for housing next June.

Supporters will also be able to write down their memories for use in a permanent souvenir of the ground. City director Richard Widdowson said: “It’s to raise awareness of the last season at St George’s Lane and to celebrate 108 years at the ground.

“We have got some cracking photographs. Anyone who is a Liverpool fan will see photographs they’ve probably never seen anywhere because we’ve only just acquired them recently.

“When you see some of these photographs, they are fantastic, even if you’re not interested in football.

“Back in those days, everybody in the city would have known someone at that game. People will see a lot of faces on there that I’m sure they’ll recognise.”

He added: “The exhibition will stir memories of some great occasions over the years and we would love to hear recollections of those who have watched football at the Lane. Come in and tell us your favourite memories.

“Was it the victory over Liverpool? The great Nobby Clark era of the seventies? or seeing City live on Match of the Day against Huddersfield?

“Maybe you played there, or perhaps you have great memories of going down the Lane with your dad, grandparents or your friends and neighbours.

“We want to hear from fans who have watched football at the Lane, but this exhibition should be of interest to anyone who loves football, whoever they support.”

Entry to the exhibition, which will run alongside a coffee morning for Worcester Gymnastics Club, is free and will finish in time for City’s home Blue Square Bet North match against Harrogate Town. Anyone with pictures they would like to exhibit, can contact the club on 01905-23003.
