Athletic Club enjoys birthday celebration
5:41pm Tuesday 2nd October 2012 in Sport
NINETY past and present members of Worcester Athletic Club gathered in the Graeme Hick Pavilion at Worcestershire County Cricket Club to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the club’s formation.
Those at the dinner ranged from under 17 athletes to several in their seventies and eighties.
The club was set up as Worcester Harriers in 1937 by three local athletes in a café on Worcester High Street.
In 1966 the club split into two and Worcester Athletic Club emerged.
Eleven years later the two clubs reunited and Worcester AC thrives today based at the city’s Nunnery Wood Sports Centre.
Guest of honour at the dinner was Andy Carrott who started his athletic career with Worcester as a 13-year-old and went on to gain international selection at 100 and 200 metres for England and Great Britain, culminating in being selected as reserve for the 4x100m relay team at the Seoul Olympics in 1988.
After the meal, Carrott presented the club’s annual awards, with the Charles Jones Cup for the overall season’s best performance going to Jenny Nesbitt for her impressive performance in winning the under 17 women’s category in the 2011-12 McCain Cross Challenge, a series of national cross-country races.
