COTTAGE INDUSTRY: Brian Murdoch with one of Harriers’ most expensive pies in football.
CATERING manager Brian Murdoch has defended the price of pies at Kidderminster Harriers after they were revealed as the most expensive in British football.
Fans pay £4 for a pie at Aggborough, more than any club in the Premier League, Football League, Scottish League, Women’s Super League or Harriers’ Blue Square Bet Premier rivals.
English champions Manchester City charge £3.50, while it’s £2.50 at Hereford United and £2 at Worcester City. But Harriers say their dishes are home-made cottage pies served in a foil dish and weigh 1lb 8oz (700g).
Murdoch insists they are hugely popular among supporters and many even pre-order them for matches.
“The fans know what they are getting and they never quibble. It’s a meal. We always sell out,” he said.
“I have been here for 51 years and we do know our customers and they order them in advance. Everybody agrees that it’s excellent value.
“When Nigel Clough was manager of Burton Albion the first thing he did when they came to Aggborough was order 20 for the players after the game.”
Murdoch added: “Generally, a football pie is pastry with hot air and a bit of meat in it. No effort goes into because they are bought in but ours are all made before the game.”
