HARRIERS chairman Rod Brown has dismissed links suggesting that former Scottish under-21 international Gavin Strachan is the club’s number one target for the vacant head coach role.

A representative of Strachan, son of Scotland boss Gordon, had contacted The Shuttle and claimed the former Peterborough United coach had been approached by the Aggborough outfit about the position.

Brown revealed on Saturday that the board have identified who they wanted but also said that he was currently working under contract elsewhere.

Strachan is currently manager of Ilkeston Town and had previously worked with Darren Ferguson at Peterborough United.

However, Brown has strongly stressed Strachan was not the club’s top target and admitted he was surprised by the link.

He said: “I am surprised about the link with Gavin, that’s came out of nowhere.

“He’s certainly not our top target, he may well be one of a number of guys who have applied but I could not say off the top of my head without checking.

“As I have said we have someone in mind but it’s a complicated and delicate situation.

“We want to get it right but time’s getting on and ideally we’d like to get our man in the next seven days.”

Among those linked to the role is Cardiff under-21s coach Kevin Nicholson, who is also not the club’s top choice for the position.
