Mickey's a fast learner for Harriers

Mickey Demetriou Mickey Demetriou

MICKEY Demetriou is a keen believer in attack being the best form of defence and vice versa for Harriers this season.

The swash-buckling left-back’s raids down the flank have been a feature in the last few months.

He's also used his experiences as a striker to help improve the defensive side of his role.

Such has been the 21-year-old’s impact he has been rewarded with a deal which keeps him at Aggborough until the end of the 2013-14 season.

It’s a big moment for the former Eastbourne Borough man, who started off playing for local side Worthing as a striker and winger, before being switched to the back when playing for Bognor Regis.

After a spell at Glenn Hoddle’s Academy in Spain, where he worked with the likes of Nigel Spackman, Graham Rix and the former England boss, he played for Borough before joining Harriers last summer.

He made his first start in the 2-2 home draw with Telford and has grew rapidly in confidence to make the position his own.

He said: “I am really pleased to have signed a new deal. I have really settled in at Harriers and am enjoying playing my football.

“I’ve only been playing as a defender for a few years, before that I was a striker but I feel I am learning fast.

“It took me a couple of games to settle into left-back and I think my second or third game was at Barrow when their winger gave me a really tough time.

“I was a bit unlucky to come up against somebody in such good form but since then I have had a run and I feel I am settled in now.

“Being an ex-forward gives me an advantage because I know what a winger wants to do and that helps me stop them.

“I also know what sort of deliveries strikers are looking for, so when I get forward I always want to put the ball where they want it.”

Such has been his form, he’s also been selected for England C’s International Challenge match against Italy at the end of the month.

WIth Lee Vaughan also putting pen to paper on a new two-year deal, Harriers have seven players secured for the 2012-13 campaign, with Anthony Malbon, Marvin Johnson, Kyle Storer, Danny Lewis and Jack Byrne also signed up.

Demetriou will be hoping the predicted snow and ice does not happen and Harriers’ league trip to in-form Tamworth goes ahead on Saturday as they look to bounce back form their mid-week FA Trophy loss to Luton.

Shuttle Online will have live match updates from tomorrow’s league clash(3pm kick-off).
