DETERMINED city golfer Darren Murton is looking forward to more England recognition after earning national honours despite only having the use of one arm.

The 33-year-old from Worcester, whose right arm has been paralysed since a motorcycle accident nearly 15 years ago, has just returned from playing for England Disabled against Scotland Disabled in the Auld Enemies Cup.

Hosted by London’s The Shire Golf Club, which was designed by the late Spanish ace Seve Ballesteros, Murton contributed 2½ points, although England ended up losing 13½-10½.

But it has given him a taste for such competitions and he is hoping it will notwon’t be the last time he competes for his country.

“It was amazing. I couldn’t believe it, they called me out of the blue. There was no way I could pass it up.” he declared.

“It was brilliant. I have never felt the nerves of a big event on the first tee so it was pretty crazy.

“I hope to play as many events as I can coming up and get called up again.”

Murton, who was sponsored to attend the prestigious three-day event by his Warndon-based employers CMCA(UK), plays off a handicap of 13 and says he has managed to adapt to swinging right-handed clubs with just his left arm.

But, Prior to his accident, he played off 28 and it took him around five years before he was ready to pick up a club again.

“It was a struggle early on but it’s all about timing,” he said.

“I started playing a couple of games and carried on going with it.”

Murton continued to make progress and he joined the Disabled Golf Association around 12 months ago.

In his first disabled competition at Bromsgrove Golf Club, he claimed the title with 38 points playing off a handicap of 18.

Murton then reduced his handicap to 16 after finishing second in his next competition at Bristol.

His success earned him a place in the England Disabled team to face Scotland at The Shire.

He secured half-a-point in the foursomes play on the first day of the match before winning 5&4 in the four-ball format on the second day.

Murton then followed that up with a 3&2 singles victory on the final day for his overall total of 2½ points.
