A TOTAL of 280 competitors took part in Worcester Swimming Club's 18th annual open meet at the Sansome Walk pool.

Swimmers from 16 clubs descended on the city for three days of action over a range of distances and events in age group categories.

Hundreds of spectators witnessed some excellent times that were among the best in the UK, with the host club claiming 41 of the 144 medals on offer.

Eleven-year-old Olivia Fletcher, from Upton, swept all before her by winning 13 golds from 13 events to cap a phenomenal performance.

She also won the knock-out skins event, where the leading swimmers race in quick-fire rounds in each discipline over 50-metres, beating a 13-year-old national swimmer in the England talent camp along the way.

Worcester para-swimmer Rebecca Redfern was also among the stars of the show as she gained two British records in the girls S13 category, although these have yet to be ratified by British Swimming.

The Mayor of Worcester, councillor Alan Amos, watched the skins event, along with Robin Walker MP, before presenting the awards.

The pair also received applause for their support in securing the eight-lane pool to be built at Perdiswell.
